Semaglutide and other weight loss medications are great for losing weight, but they decrease your appetite. They sometimes cause food aversions as well. The food you always loved to eat, now doesn't seem that appealing to you. This is great if it is a jelly donut, but if it is a piece of chicken or meat, you may not be getting enough protein in.
What is Protein?
Proteins are essential macromolecules that play a crucial role in the human body. They are composed of amino acids, which are the building blocks that our bodies use to create and repair tissues.
Why do we need Protein?
1. Tissue Repair and Growth
2. Enzyme Function
3. Hormone Production
4. Immune System Support
5. Transport and Storage
6. Maintain Fluid Balance
7. Energy at certain times
How much Protein do we need?
The amount of protein needed varies based on factors such as age, sex, activity level, and overall health goals. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is generally around 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight for the average sedentary adult. However, individuals with higher activity levels, athletes, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people recovering from injuries might require more protein. For those engaged in regular physical activity or aiming to build muscle, protein intake might range from 1.2 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.
For example, a sedentary female weighing 147 lbs which is 66.67 kgs would need at least 53 grams of protein per day. If she was exercising regularly, she may need anywhere from 80-133 grams of protein per day. Please check with your own health care provider to determine what is a safe level of protein in your diet. For my patients that are on weight loss medications, I recommend a goal of 100 grams per day.
How to get more Protein in your diet?
My favorite product that I recommend to my patients and use myself is Atkins Plus shakes which have 30 Grams of protein. It is difficult to find in regular stores, so I usually order mine on Amazon. I buy the vanilla flavor. You can drink them as they are, or you can add them to a blender with frozen strawberries to make a smoothie. They come in Vanilla and Chocolate.
